Google Confirms Android XR Allows Passthrough Camera Access: an Important Tool for MR Devs
Google has confirmed that Android XR will offer passthrough camera access, allowing developers to enhance mixed reality experiences with real-time spatial analysis. Similar to Android on smartphones, apps can request camera permissions for world-facing and face-tracking streams, which could unlock new AI-driven mixed reality applications. Android XR is still in preview, with the first headset expected later this year.

Palmer Luckey’s Anduril Industries Takes the Helm of U.S. Army’s IVAS AR Program from Microsoft
Microsoft and Anduril Industries (founded by Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey) have announced an agreement that will see Anduril take on responsibilities related to production, hardware and software development, and delivery timelines of the U.S. Army’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). The IVAS military XR headset project is based on Microsoft’s HoloLens technology and is designed to enhance soldiers' situational awareness with AR and AI insights.
