After a prestigious selection in this year's Berlinale Encounter section where it World Premiered and won the Special Jury Award, Chinese filmmaker QIU Yang is coming to New York to present SOME RAIN MUST FALL. QIU's feature debut will make its North American Premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival on June 6th.

QIU Yang is no stranger to the festival circuit. His previous short film SHE RUNS (2019) was selected at part of the 58th Critics' Week in Cannes and the New York Film Festival. A GENTLE NIGHT (2017) won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and screened in Telluride, Toronto and New York. UNDER THE SUN (2015), his first short film was a selection of Cannes Cinéfondation, New Directors/New Films and Clermont Ferrand.

SOME RAIN MUST FALL is an immersion into the daily life of a middle-class Chinese family. At its center is Cai, a forty-something housewife and mother of daughter Lin. Freely inspired by the director's own mother, Cai is a complex character. A women of few words, she goes through life's hardship with both silence and endurance...One day, she accidentally hurts an elderly woman at one of her daughter's basketball games - the incident will mark a turning point in her life, where she choose to break away from Chinese traditions in a society where decisions are largely made by men.

Having himself grown up in a similar familial context, QIU tells a story from his past that everybody around him knows but nobody talks about. For SOME RAIN MUST FALL, he masterfully directs theatre actress YU Aier who in the lead role, delivers a moving and heart-wrenching performance.

German-born cinematographer Constanze Schmitt, a long time collaborator of QIU creates a darkly enigmatic and intimate atmosphere. She invents a visual language of restraint and subtle power, which allow viewers to look in from afar and observe the tragedy that unfolds in front of them.
