JOSEP! A Filipino American Trailblazer Turns a Year Younger

I can count with one hand the simple things in life that unite Filipinos: beauty pageants, karaoke, basketball, boxing, and Jo Koy specials. After Manny Pacquiao hung up his gloves for good, Pinoys have had few options to choose for on screen entertainment. What else could grace our TVs during gatherings other than teleseryes and ABS-CBN?

So, we did what Filipinos do best, we came out in support of Jo Koy. For years, we’d clung onto crumbs of representation, satiated by whatever little Hollywood fed us. But here was one of our own, joking around like someone’s Tito at a party while giving our culture a platform to be recognized and appreciated.

Since his debut, Jo Koy has released special after special, amassing fans and continuously growing in popularity. And the love is highly reciprocated.

On a quiet Tuesday night, Jo Koy celebrated his 53rd birthday at Historic Filipinotown street food staple "Dollar Hits" taking selfies with fans and handing out autographed merchandise. In true Filipino fashion, the comic icon shut down the cash register, and picked up dinner tabs to all patrons in attendance.

To Filipinos, Jo Koy is more than his specials and the Hollywood glamor. Jo Koy is hope that if one of us can make it, anyone can. He catered to a community that had been long overlooked, making us feel welcome in a place where we never felt we were. More than that, he’s family, even without blood relation.
