We are three days into the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and even in the snowy streets, the energy continues in Park City and Salt Lake City! Today, January 25, marked the first Saturday of the Festival bringing with it another full day of premieres, programs, activations, and unforgettable moments featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Carey Mulligan, Alia Shawkat, Joel Edgerton, Bao Nguyen, Swann Arlaud, Brandi Carlile, Sara Bareilles, Glenon Doyle, Tig Notaro, Kevin Nealon, Abby Wambach, and more! 

 

The Sundance Institute also announced the artists selected for the 2025 Merata Mita Fellowship and the Graton Fellowship for Artists from California-Based Tribes. The filmmakers, Rhayne Vermette (Métis) and Roni Jo Draper (Yurok) and Stefan Perez (Coast Miwok) were honored at the Sundance Film Festival’s Native Forum Celebration presented by NBCUniversal LAUNCH at The Park.



JANUARY 25 HIGHLIGHTS

 

  • PREMIERES INCLUDE:


o    THE THING WITH FEATHERS

§  Director Dylan Southern and his cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Boxall, Henry Boxall, Eric Lampaert, Vinette Robinson, and Sam Spruell attended the premiere and spoke about the  film after the screening. 

 

o    ATROPIA

§  The premiere of Hailey Gates’ feature directorial debut included cast members Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner, and Tony Shawkat on the press line and at the Q&A. Audiences were doubly surprised when they discovered an unannounced, secret cameo of Channing Tatum in the film.  

o    THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND

§  Carey Mulligan returned to the Sundance Film Festival alongside cast members Tim Key, Tom Basden, Akemnji Ndifornyen, and director James Griffiths for the film’s premiere and took part in an engaging Q&A. 

 

o    COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT

§  Producer Tig Notaro, executive producers Abby Wambach, Brandi Carlile, Sara Bareilles, and Glennon Doyle along with director Ryan White attended the film’s premiere with the documentary’s subjects and took part in a poignant Q&A conversation. 

 

o    THE STRINGER

§  Grammy and Emmy Awards-nominated director Bảo Nguyễn attended the press line and introduced the film’s subject, Nguyen Thanh Nghe to the audience, who received a standing ovation and took part in an intimate and thought-provoking Q&A.

  • Native Forum Celebration presented by NBCUniversal LAUNCH 

    • The Native Forum Celebration brought together Sundance Institute Indigenous Program Fellows, grantees, and alumni on Traditional Ute Nation Territory.

    • The event recognized Indigenous-led projects featured in the Festival’s lineup, along with the 2024 Native Lab fellows, Program funders, and contributors. 

    • The event announced the 2025 Merata Mita and Graton fellows.

      • 2025 Merata Mita Fellow: Rhayne Vermette (Métis)

      • 2025 Graton Fellowships: Roni Jo Draper (Yurok) and Stefan Perez (Coast Miwok). 

 

  • TRAIN DREAMS - SALT LAKE CELEBRATION FILM

    • The year’s Salt Lake Celebration event highlighted the film, Train Dreams, which premieres tomorrow, January 26 in Park City.
