by María Aparicio Wins the Cinema Tropical Award 

for Best Latin American Film of the Year


Other Winners Announced this Evening:

PEPE (Dominican Republic) for Best Non-Fiction Film;

THE DELINQUENTS (Argentina) for Best Director;

THE SETTLERS (Chile) for Best First Film;

and SKIN OF GLASS for Best U.S. Latinx Film


New York, N.Y., January 14, 2025. The Argentine feature Undefined Things (Las cosas indefinidas) by María Aparicio has been named Best Latin American Film of the Year at the 15th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards, announced this evening at a special event hosted by Film at Lincoln Center in New York City and emceed by NY1 Noticias anchor Philip Klint.


This is the second consecutive year that an Argentine film wins the top award at the Cinema Tropical Awards, following Trenque Lauquen by Laura Citarella, which won Best Latin American Film last year.


This year’s jury gave the award for Best Non-Fiction Film to Pepe by Dominican director Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias. Argentine filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno received the Cinema Tropical Award for Best Director for his work on The Delinquents (Los delincuentes), while Chilean filmmaker Felipe Gálvez’s The Settlers (Los colonos) won the award for Best First Film. In the U.S. Latinx Cinema category, the award for Best Film went to Skin of Glass, the documentary feature by Denise Zmekhol.


This year’s Latin American winners were selected by a jury comprising Milton Guillén, filmmaker and Senior Programmer for the Camden International Film Festival/Points North Institute; Josh Gardner, Associate Programmer, AFI Fest and AFI Silver Theatre; and Isabel Rojas, Director of OaxaCine.


The U.S. Latinx Film Awards winners were chosen by Sabrina Avilés, Founding Executive Director of CineFest Latino Boston; Eugenio del Bosque, Director of CineFestival San Antonio; and Gabriel Magraner, Associate Director, The Latinx Project at New York University.


Eligible films had a runtime of at least 60 minutes and premiered between May 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024.


Cinema Tropical’s programs are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The 15th Cinema Tropical Awards reception was sponsored by Mezcales de Leyenda.
