Angel City went full force against Brazilian soccer legend Marta and the Orlando Pride tonight with seven of their players back from international duty and supported by their 18,102 boisterous home fans.
But despite Angel City FC’s crisp passing and control in the midfield, Orlando scored first off a magnificent volley from striker Adriana on the 22nd minute providing the game’s lone goal and putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Orlando Pride defender Kylie Storm became a nightmare for ACFC’s strikers the entire game completing tackles, blocking crosses and passes spoiling Angel City’s attempts at goal.
With the home team dominating ball possession at 64% and 21 shot attempts made, coach Becky Tweed’s side applied pressure all throughout, putting in fresh legs for multiple attacking positions and changing formation leaving three defensive players at the back. But luck was not Angel City FC’s side as their strikers had their fair share of scoring an equalizer. Alyssa Thompson, Savannah McCaskill, Claire Emslie, Jun Endo and company tried but were unsuccessful. Even a questionable non-call on a clear handball in the 83rd minute was not reviewed.
This is the first loss for Angel City FC since Becki Tweed took over as interim head coach in June of this year. The loss places their team ninth on the standings and will play Houston Dash on the road on October 8th.
