Go on a Tangent. We dare you.

Our First Tangent

Editor-in-Chief Katareena Roska

Our editor-in-chief and founder Katareena Roska began with one question: Where can I write about Kobe Bryant’s legacy, the feminist implications of Sex and the City, and the heartwrenching prose of Richard Siken?

The answer came in the form of a follow-up question: Is there a platform like that for a high-schooler like me?

The journey that Kat ventured on has been long and winding, but she credits her team completely. Words are our power, and we’re not afraid to use them. Sometimes, you have to take matters into your own hands, let your imagination run wild, and go on a Tangent.

What is Tangent?

Tangent Zine is a youth-led online publication dedicated to the power of words and determined to speak up, even if our voices shake. We’re committed to professionally training our staff, composed of teenagers and now even adults, offering free resources, and providing a platform to those whose stories don’t get told.

Today, we’re professionally credentialed, frequently working elbow to elbow alongside the LA and NY Times. You can find Tangent on the sidelines of the major leagues—like MLB, NBA, NWSL, MLS, and USWNT—or with local athletes at the Special Olympics. We’re a bit baby-faced, but we’ve got the same spunk as our older associates. Our work has brought us face-to-face with Greta Gerwig, Kid Cudi, Megan Rapinoe, Mark Cuban, and even Jerry West. We’ve covered LA sports, college athletics, film festivals, conventions, and real local stories, In 2023, we’ve garnered over 35,000 views from an international audience.
